Stiffkey Fen restoration
Stiffkey Fen restoration
Working in partnership with Buxton Conservation Trust, Natural England and former RSPB expert Norman Sills, 12 hectares of land at Stiffkey Fen SSSI have been restored. The Fen is one of Norfolk’s key sites for wading birds – particularly avocets.
Old and new channels have been excavated, and new back-waters and ponds have been created to improve the water flow through the Fen. The reed-beds around the margins have also been restored and enhanced. Ultimately, the project should reduce the need to pump water into the Fen, and will greatly improve water quality and habitat diversity.
